Women play a significantrole in the mountainous region of Uttarakhand, keeping themselves busy in household chores along withnurturing children and livestock, going out for collection of fodder, fuel, drinking water and NTFP as well as engagement in agricultural practices for sustaining livelihoods. Rural women are aware about biological diversity and rich in indigenous knowledge of natural resources and their management. AT India has promoted gender equity in the mountain development by conducting awareness and training programmes on gender in the targeted villages by supporting the formation of women centred cooperatives and SHGs, etc. A gender perspective has progressively been integrated in organization’s thematic competencies like natural resource management, livelihood generation, etc.
