AT India has contributed a bit to check outmigration from villages of Rudraprayag by enabling people to generate income, by giving hope and stimulating interest in doing work in some of the remotest areas of our mountains.
Prof. S.P. Singh is one of the top notch Himalayan ecologists in the world. He joined Kumaun University, Nainital (in 1977) and contributed to the development of a major ecological group there. He also worked as a Vice Chancellor of the HNB Garhwal University. Prof. Singh made pioneering studies on Himalayan vegetation, both terrestrial and aquatic, from tropical to alpine, with major emphasis on forest ecosystem processes and on applications of ecology to solution of environmental problems. He took several initiatives in participatory research in which communities are involved, helped Uttarakhand state to get its ecosystem services recognized in national accounting systems, enabled local communities to participate in carbon trading and ensured new dimensions to academics in HNB Garhwal University. He also worked to establish partnership between Indian ecologists and the Ecological Society of America.
