Ushamath Mahila Mahasangh (UMM) - Community Owned Microfinance Institute In Uttrakhand

Ushamath Mahila Mahasangh Ltd. (UMM) is a federation of women SHGs, established and registered under Uttarakhand Self-Reliant Cooperative Society Act 2003. UMM has been working with the objectives to cater unmet financial needs of poor women living in remotest areas of Uttarakhand state. Structured as a community based microfinance institution UMM's mandate is to focus on the solutions that help improving socio economic status of marginalized and low-income households in mountain villages of state of Uttarakhand. UMM has pioneered to introduce affordable, convenient and door steps financial services for mountain women especially those who remained beyond reach of formal financial services. UMM, as community owned micro- Finance institute (MFI) relentlessly catering financial needs of poor women in mountain villages since its inceptions and has ensured inclusive financial inclusion for approximately 12850 women. To be able to meet the small loans and insurance needs of its client SHGs, UMM has developed partnership with different organizations such as National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), State Bank of India (SBI), District Cooperative Bank (DCB) Chamoli, Small Industrial Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Rastriya Mahila Kosh(RMK) and most recently a Bangalore based Organization called "Rang De". Over the years it has mobilized loan funds of the order of Rs. 2.92 crore from different organizations, banks and financial institutions and has disbursed a cumulative amount Rs.10.50 crore among 6425 of SHGs clients. UMM has institutionalized its microfinance program through Self Help Groups (SHGs) method. SHGs are organized as Valley/Cluster Level Associations (VLAs) similar to what most MFIs follow. UMM has got altogether 38 valley Level Associations (VLAs). As a growing microfinance institution UMM has made reasonable progress in the microfinance sector in terms of its increased outreach and portfolio. It has been working with 1504 SHGs having 12850 women members currently, with a cumulative saving of Rs. 2.92 Crore.

The central objective of UMM is to bring social, economic, cultural and political development of the poor who are mainly neglected by traditional financial system.

Area Of Operations

658 villages of 6 mountain districts viz. Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Pauri Garhwal and Chakrata block of Dehradun district.

Loan Clients

UMM has a loan client base of 6425 women SHGs members. The repeat loan clients of UMM at present number 725.

Total Loan Disbursement

Since the beginning of its operation UMM has disbursed an amount of Rs.10.50 Cr. among 6425 clients. It has ensured through rigorous monitoring 98% repayment rate.
